ALTERNATIVETHERAPIESjulaug2011VOL.17NO.457EurythmyTherapyinAnxietyover2years.22TwopreviousstudiesfoundbeneGcialeffectsofAMtherapiesonanxietyincancerpatients.2324Herewepresentthecaseofapatientsufferingfromunspeci-GedanxietythatwastreatedwithanAMtreatmentx14EYTx14andshowedaremarkableimprovement.ClinicalobservationsAMdiagnosisandtreatmentaredescribedinthetextandthetheoreti-calbackgroundisoutlinedinthesidebaronpage63..CASEx0PRESENTATIONHistoryx0Presentingx0Conditionx0andx0DiagnosisA21-year-oldSwedishwomanhadcollapsedafterabusyandstressfulworkingperiodinsummer2003.ShethensufferedfromincreasingepisodesofheartpalpitationsandfaintingincreasingsymptomsofdizzinessandfeelingsofbeingdisconnectedunrestfearofbeingaloneofhavingcancerofdeathsocialanxietydifG-cultyinmakingdecisionsheadachesleeplessnesstinglingintheGngertipssolesofthefeetandleftsideofthefacenauseabrux-ismandmuscularpainsespeciallyintheneck.Oftenshewokeupatnightbecauseofanxiety.Symptomshadledtotheconsultationofanemergencyhospitaldepartmentbutnoorganiccauseeghearttroublehypo-orhypertensioninfectionwasfound.FromAugust2003onwardtheyoungwomanconsultedtheFamilyPhysicianCareCentreoftheSwedishAMVidarklinikenforheranxiety.Herethreephysiciansonepediatricianandtwogener-alpractitionersoneofwhomhadbeenthepatientx19sfamilyphysi-cianformanyyearsPAsawthepatientandmadethesamediagnosisstress-inducedunspeciGcanxietyindetailunspeciGedanxietyInternationalClassiGcationofDiseasesICDcodeF41.9reactiontostressICDcodeF43.9andcervicalmyalgiaICDcodeM79.Importantinhermedicalhistorywasbothatraumaticexposuretoemotionallystressfulfamilyrelationshipswhenshewasaged9to11yearsandthepainfulexperienceoftheprotractedlife-threateningillnessofhermotherwhenthepatientwasaged11to13years.Betweenages16and19thepatienthadmoderatelysevereanorexia.Inadditionshehadsufferedfromseveralmanifestationsofanxietyinherchildhoodsuchasobsessivecleanlinessanxietyaboutcontaminationandfearofinfectionwithintestinalparasites.Otherwisetherewerenomajorillnessesorevents.Physicalneuro-logicalandlaboratoryGndingswerenormalexceptformyalgiaintheupperbackandneckregion.FromVidarklinikenthepatientwasgivenimmediatesickleavefromworkGrst100and3weekslater50.ShereceivedoutpatienttreatmentwithAMbackembrocationandmedicine20dropsTx0Cardiodoron3timesdailyAurumD10StibiumD8twicedaily15dropsArnicaD33timesdailyandreceivedsomeinstructionsforself-helpbehavioralapproaches.Despitethetreatmentherconditionfur-therdeterioratedduringthefollowing2months.Heranxietyincreasedsothatshewasunabletobewithothersortoleaveherhome.Hersickleavewasincreasedagainto100andherAMmedi-cationwaschanged20dropsBryophyllumx0Argentoculta13timesdailyandsubcutaneousinjectionsArgentumD6ConchaeD73timesweekly.AdditionallyfromOctober2003onwardshereceivedcoun-selingofasupportiveandconGrmativenatureatanearbypsychiatricoutpatienthospitalforyoungpeople.Howeverherconditionimprovedlittle.Thepatientwasdejectedbytheslowdevelopmentandherinabilitytoactivelycontributetothetreatment.Thephysi-cianPAanticipatedthatabout2yearsoftreatmentwereneededinordertoachieveasubstantialimprovement.Anthroposophicx0Medicinex0DiagnosisAgainstthebackgroundoftheanthroposophicconceptseethesidebarthepsychologicaltraumainthepatientx19ssecond7-yearageperiodwereseenastohaveimpactedontwocloselyconnectedaspectsofthehumanmaturationtheemotionallifewithspecialregardtoinwardnessandtherhythmicsystem.DisturbancesinthisspeciGcmaturationprocesscanleadtomentalemotionalsymp-tomsthatistosaydepressionoranxiety.Thereforethepatientx19sanxietywasinterpretedasanafter-effectofhertraumaticjuvenileexperiences.AccordinglytheAMspeciGcdiagnosiswasstress-in-ducedanxietybasedonajuvenilerhythmicsystemdisturbance.Inviewofthisdiagnosisthephysiciandecidedonaeurythmytreatment.Anthroposophicx0Medicinex0Treatmentx0Eurythmyx0TherapyEYTeurythmyfromtheGreekmeaningx1charmoniousrhythmx1disamovementtherapyinvolvingcognitiveemotionalandvolitionalelements.ItisprovidedbyEYTtherapistswith5yearsoftrainingaccordingtoaninternationalstandardizedcurricu-lum.25EYTisconductedmainlyinindividualsessionsduringwhichpatientsareinstructedtoperformspecificmovementswiththearmsthelegsorthewholebody.Thesemovementsarerelatedtothesoundsofvowelsandconsonantstomusicintervalsortosoulgesturesegsympathy-antipathyandarenamedaccordingly.Theyareselecteddependingonthepatientx19sdiseaseconstitutionandcurrentpatternofposturesgesturesandmovementsasfarastheseexpressthepatientx19svitalityandspirit-soullevels.2627InourpatientEYTwasindicatedinorderto1treatthepatientx19srhythmicsystemandtherebyconsolidateherbothphysi-callyandemotionallyand2strengthenherpersonalitysothatshecouldmeetthedemandsofimpendingadulthood.EYTwasstartedattheVidarklinikenDayRehabilitationinJanuary20046monthsaftertheinitialconsultationforanxiety.EYTwasconductedfor8weeksonesessionperweeklasting30minutesbetweensessionsthepatientpracticedtheexercisesonherown.BeforetheEYTsessionsthepatientreceivedanAM-speciGcmassageincludingkidneyembrocationusingcopperointmentafterwhichsherestedinaprivateroom.AftereachsessiontheEYTtherapistJSdocumen
